New General Secretary's vision of the future

You may have noticed that Brian Ellis has now retired as General Secretary although he will be making a special guest appearance at this years AGM in Mira. T-shirts and base ball caps bearing his name will be on sale to support the purchase of his various BMW cars and he will be running an autograph session afterwards. It’s also true that I have taken over from Brian and whilst we have had some issues involving signatures at banks we are through the learning curve on most issues.

Membership continues to grow and we have now approved another new member KWO Dichtungstechnik from Germany, a specialist manufacturer of PTFE tapes. This adds to Morgan International and Lubrizol as new members for the first time this year. Hopefully we can continue to grow this new group throughout the course of the year. All three will be attending the AGM.

A group of ESA members are working hard on enhancing the web site and you may have noticed that we now have a new area called News and Events where we list all the news articles in each newsletter and we have an events calendar. As always, content is important and if you feel there is something you would like to share then please send it in. We can’t accept product or commercial content but anything wider afield such as interesting company information is always welcome. We will also be introducing a new area to the web site called Careers where member companies can post new vacancies and where individuals or universities can post their own profiles for potential positions in member companies.

A central database of contacts is also being created. You will have noticed that we no longer list all recipients on large e mail circulars which has the added benefit of preventing people from replying to all. This should be fully live soon along with the new members area.

The Divisions continue to meet and if you have attended any of the meetings recently you will notice that the issues are wide and varied. I think everyone knows that it’s not always possible to attend in person so many of these meeting know have a live feed via Go To Meeting. This appears to be quite popular and we will run most of the AGM Divisional meetings on a similar basis for those that can't attend. The technical side of computers, cameras and the internet might just throw a spanner in the works but we can at least try! Most of the hotels for the AGM are nearing capacity so if you haven’t already done so, book now! The provisional main agenda is located in this news letter or via the web site under News and Events.

Hopefully I will see you all at Mira and please let me have your feedback on the news letter or any other issue.

Mark Neal, ESA General Secretary.
