Packing Division News

A working group consisting of members of the ESA and the FSA is currently working on the revision of the Compression Packing Handbook. The significant changes and updates are in the sections of legislation and standards as well as calculations due to new insights that came out of recent testing.

The "Valve Packing Characterisation & Design" project that is taking place in cooperation with CETIM and the FSA. Testing on PTFE packing has been completed. Hubert Lejeune from CETIM will present a paper at the Industrial Valve Summit 2015 in Italy.

Work is continuing on the joint ESA/FSA research project into compression packing friction. In order to get more data points, some additional mechanical seals have been tested and more packing styles will be tested at different pressures and speeds.

A task force from the Packing Division is working on the creation of a general training guide that will provide general guidance on selection and installation of various types of packing. The framework for this training is being made with the help of various member companies and a proposal will be presented at the AGM 2015.
