Update from the Technical Director of Mechanical Seals Division

1) Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 Food Contact Materials:

Especially Article 16 - Declaration of compliance for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food is still causing problems in the field. ESA has issued a Position Paper in June (see ESA website) and has contacted the Commission to further clarify the subject. A meeting may be scheduled in autumn this year.

2) EHEDG Doc 25 -  Design of mechanical seals for hygienic and aseptic applications:
ESA is actively participating in a work group updating that guideline. A first meeting took place in May and the various discussion points targeted.

3) Containment Index:
A small working group of ESA`s Mechanical Seal Division has restarted this project

4) ESA project on Drinking Water Directive, see David Mitchell’s Standards and Legislation Director.

5) Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE):
This European guideline has a potential to create a conflict for mechanical seal suppliers. It is interesting to get a feedback from our members to what extent customers have already asked questions.

Please contact Steven Bullen (steven.bullen@chesterton.com) or Wolfgang Schoepplein (w.schoepplein@t-online.de) if you would like further details.
