ESA is collaborating with all its divisions to exchange information and improve sustainability, thereby reducing the carbon footprint for all member companies. By working together, we aim to develop more environmentally friendly products and packaging methods, accelerating the transition to sustainable options. This includes exploring innovations in biodegradable plastics, alternative packaging types, sustainable manufacturing methods, and effective recycling techniques.
Plastics Reduction Initiative
The Packings Division, in collaboration with DENSIQ, IDT, and General Packing, is testing a new box and packaging method that eliminates the use of plastics and even eliminating the metal flanges on the cardboard coils. Additionally, AVKO has volunteered to evaluate this new packaging method for their packings. We eagerly await feedback from our members on this initiative by the end of June.
The Flange Gaskets Division is nearing the completion of the project to replace plastic spacers in spiral wound gaskets. Companies like Burgmann Packings have developed silicone alternatives, while VED has presented a biodegradable option. A commercial offer will be presented to the members for their final approval.
Further research is ongoing to find biodegradable alternatives to replace shrink foils.
Promoting Sustainable Production and Recycling
The Expansion Joints Division is exploring ways to recycle fabric expansion joint materials, though multi-layer fabrics present a challenge.
The Mechanical Seal Division has proposed the following ideas:
- Reduce the need for new seal facings by increasing the refurbishment of existing ones, thereby lowering the carbon footprint.
- Quantify the lifecycle footprint of sealing products, such as mechanical seals. A link to the EPD Portal has been shared to define Product Category Rules (PCR) for typical products, including mechanical seals.
These topics will be further explored during our next online ESG meeting on August 28.
