India, as the 3rd largest energy consumer globally, is at the heart of the global energy dialogue. With its thriving economy and expanding population, the country is projected to witness the largest increase in energy demand, making it a significant contributor to global energy demand growth. However, the strategy is that India will meet 50% of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030. The country continues to focus on new and renewable energy, especially across the sectors of Hydrogen, Solar and Nuclear projects. Currently, it seems there is a strong push from the government on green steel. The National Green Hydrogen Mission sanctioned three pilot projects for the use of hydrogen for green steel production. These green hydrogen projects will receive a total of INR 347 crore (approx. EUR 38 million) and will be commissioned within the next 3 years. While discussing green steel, India’s largest private steel plant, Tata Steel is taking a different route and is exploring modular nuclear reactors to reach its goal for green steel.
We also have some updates from the Indian Standard (BIS) Gasket and Packing Committee meeting. The IS 16916:2018 for Polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE Gasket Material is being updated to accommodate new technical specifications along with the introduction of new standards for Flexible Graphite material and another for testing of Oxidation performance on Flexible Graphite. The PTFE standard is especially critical since there is currently an anti-dumping duty on certain PTFE Raw materials from countries with whom India shares a land border.
