In our recent ESA newsletter, we talked about how each of us can lower our carbon footprint, especially by understanding the environmental impact of face-to-face meetings. We provided a detailed guide on how to calculate the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for a two-day meeting, suggesting eco-friendly practices in areas like transportation, hotel stays, food and drink choices, energy use, water consumption, shopping habits, waste management, and other lifestyle decisions.

ESA is collaborating with all its divisions to exchange information about reducing plastic use among member companies. By working together, we aim to develop products and packaging that are more environmentally friendly, which can speed up the switch to sustainable options. This includes exploring innovations in biodegradable plastics, different types of packaging, sustainable manufacturing methods, and effective recycling techniques, all of which can help us move away from using traditional plastics.

Plastics Reduction Initiative

The Packings Division, together with DENSIQ, IDT, and General Packing, is testing a new box and packaging method without the use of plastics and even eliminating the use of the metal flange on the cardboard coil. We’re eagerly awaiting feedback from our members on this initiative by the end of June.

The Flange Gaskets Division is also working on a project to replace plastic spacers for spiral wound gaskets. Companies like Burgmann Packings have developed silicone alternatives, while VED presented a biodegradable option.

The Mechanical Seal Division shared a packaging solution by Chesterton. To make the transition smoother for end-users, the company is including a letter explaining the reasons behind the change.

The Elastomeric & Polymeric Seals Division, along with the Expansion Joints Division, are also exploring ways to reduce plastic usage.

Promoting sustainable production and recycling

As we gear up for the next online ESG meeting on May 30th at 15:00 CEST, we’re inviting all members to share their ideas focusing on sustainable production methods and recycling within the sealing industry. This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to promoting environmental responsibility and driving meaningful change towards a more sustainable future.
